This is the closing note in Paulo Coelho’s book “Eleven Minutes”.
"Eleven Minutes tells the story of Maria, a young girl from a Brazilian village, whose first innocent encounters with love leave her heart-broken. She becomes convinced that she will never find true love, instead believing that 'Love is a terrible thing that will make you suffer...' A chance meeting in Rio takes her to Geneva, where she dreams of finding fame and fortune yet ends up working the streets as a prostitute."
Sounds like a cliché? Well, keep on reading!
"In Geneva, Maria drifts further and further away from love while at the same time developing a fascination with sex. Eventually, Maria's despairing view of love is put to the test when she meets a handsome young painter. In this odyssey of self-discovery, Maria has to choose between pursuing a path of darkness, sexual pleasure for its own sake or risking everything to find her own 'inner light' and the possibility of sacred sex, sex in the context of love."
So, why am I writing all that here?
I don't really intent to start a debate about sex in the context of love versus sex without love; partly because I am still making up my mind about it. But Coelho's book deals with this subjext in a very refreshing manner. He explores the spiritual nature of sex and love and invites us to do the same. So, I just thought I share this reading experience with you and put some of his thoughts up here as they provide quite interesting material for discussion. Maybe we should have a debate about this after all?
Here are some of his words about the book:
"It took me a long time to learn that the coming together of two bodies is more than just a response to certain physical stimuli or to the survival instinct of the species. We forget that sex is a manifestation of a spiritual energy called love.
If you give yourself entirely, you will break through any mental block your partner may have, however impenetrable, because the act of giving yourself means: 'I trust you.' At that moment, real sexual energy comes into play, and that energy exists not only in those areas we term the erogenous zones. It spreads throughout the whole body, into every hair and every pore. Every millimetre is now emanating a different light, one that is recognised and absorbed by the other body.
We must become aware that, when two bodies meet, they are walking together into unknown territory."
Food for thoughts...
